Marvel Rivals’ Season 9 update will affect 80% of its roster as NetEase throws balance out the window for a more ‘fun’ approach to the game
Marvel Rivals is entering Season 9 with its most comprehensive combat overhaul since launch, touching roughly four-fifths of its playable roster. The changes address mounting player frustration over previous seasons, which saw poorly targeted balance adjustments and an overpowering Strategist role that made ultimate abilities dominate match outcomes. Hero reworks, altered Team-Up mechanics, and substantial ultimate charge conversions are on the way.
The ultimate ability nerfs represent the most concrete balance shift: Vanguard and Duelist characters will see their conversion rate drop from 70% to 55%, whilst Strategists experience cuts from 75% to 55% (damage) and 75% to 60% (healing). NetEase's development team cited mounting complexity within the ability system as a driving factor behind the Team-Up overhaul, signalling an effort to simplify rather than expand the game's mechanical depth going forward.
- NetEase is overhauling Marvel Rivals' combat system in Season 9, affecting 80% of the hero roster with reworks and balance changes
- Ultimate ability charge rates are being significantly reduced across role types to decrease their frequency in team fights
- Team-Up system is being redesigned to address complexity issues that accumulated as the game's ability pool expanded
