Marvel’s Newest Series Is Finally Paying Off a Forgotten MCU Easter Egg 15 Years Later

Collider · 2 hours ago

Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest, which concludes a trilogy that began with WandaVision and Agatha All Along, appears set to pay off a 15-year-old Easter egg from Captain America: The First Avenger. A display at D23 featuring a flame-engulfed, circuit-covered figure has led fans to speculate that the show will introduce Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch and Marvel Comics' first-ever superhero, marking a significant deep-cut nod for long-time fans. The series, starring Paul Bettany as Vision, explores a version of the character whose consciousness contains various MCU artificial intelligences, including Ultron.

Hammond previously made a brief cameo in Captain America: The First Avenger, appearing as an exhibit labelled the "Synthetic Man" at the Stark Expo, a reference to his origins as one of the Marvel Universe's earliest artificial beings. In the comics, Hammond was created by Phineas Horton and later fought alongside Captain America in the Invaders during the Second World War. Showrunner Terry Matalas could use VisionQuest to develop this long-dormant thread, while Bettany has hinted that the series may resurrect several characters previously thought dead.

  • VisionQuest may finally introduce original Human Torch Jim Hammond.
  • Pays off a Captain America: The First Avenger cameo from 15 years ago.
  • Paul Bettany's Vision returns alongside MCU artificial intelligences, including Ultron.
