Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Gets Huge Boost 3 Years After Launch Thanks to Box Office Phenomenon Spider-Man: Brand New Day

IGN · 4 hours ago

Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Insomniac's PS5 and PC game from 2023, has seen a major resurgence in players and sales following the box office success of the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Analysts describe it as a striking example of a "transmedia halo effect", where a hit film drives renewed interest in a related video game, and suggest publishers could deliberately time future releases to capture the same boost.

According to data from Alinea Analytics, the game has sold a further 316,000 copies since the film's launch, generating $11 million (£8.6m) in under two weeks and pushing lifetime sales to 18.2 million copies and around $1.2 billion (£940m) in revenue. Daily active users hit 1 million for the first time since launch week, roughly 2.6 times pre-film engagement, a rise likely aided by a recent update adding new suits, including one matching Tom Holland's costume from the film. Sony and Insomniac's next release, Marvel's Wolverine, has no accompanying film to generate a similar effect when it launches in September.
