McArdle ‘really encouraged’ despite Portugal loss

BBC Sport ·

Northern Ireland women’s manager Michael McArdle said the play-off defeat by Portugal could mark the beginning of a new team identity, despite a 7-1 aggregate loss. His side took the lead through Kess Elmore in the second leg but Portugal came back to win 3-1, extending Northern Ireland’s run to four consecutive defeats.

McArdle praised the team’s brave, energetic approach and said he was encouraged by new players’ contributions, while acknowledging frustration with the scoreline. Four players made their debuts across the two matches, and Elmore scored on hers. Several experienced players were absent; Northern Ireland will prepare for next year’s Nations League, where they will play in League B.

  • Portugal won the play-off 7-1 on aggregate.
  • Kess Elmore scored on her Northern Ireland debut.
  • McArdle sees signs of a new team identity.

New here? Start with this

Northern Ireland’s women’s team represents the country in international football and is managed by Michael McArdle. Portugal are a stronger-established side, and the two teams met over two legs in a play-off, with the combined score deciding the winner.

The Nations League is an international competition in which teams play in groups organised into leagues. Northern Ireland will compete in League B next year, giving the team further matches as it develops its squad and approach.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

McArdle’s optimism has a reasonable basis: a brave, energetic performance, a debut goal from Kess Elmore and contributions from new players may signal the beginnings of a stronger team identity. With several experienced players absent, the play-offs could offer useful lessons and a foundation for next year’s Nations League campaign.

The case against

The aggregate score and four consecutive defeats give grounds to question whether a new identity is translating into results. Taking the lead in the second leg was encouraging, but losing 3-1 and 7-1 overall may suggest that energy and promise are not yet enough to compete consistently, making the manager’s optimism premature.
