Meet the Sheffield music community celebrating its first birthday

Exposed Magazine ·

Under the Wire, a Sheffield music community founded by working musician Dan Millson, is marking its first birthday with a free event at Church House on 25 October. The weekly sessions bring together performers of different ages and experience, helping people meet, play together and feel more comfortable joining in with live music.

The community grew from Millson’s reworking of the open mic at Porter Cottage: each artist plays one song at a time, then gets another turn, creating chances for musicians to collaborate. Wednesday sessions start at 8pm and can build into group jams; around 12 people shared the stage at a recent one. Under the Wire has also arranged performances at Sheffield Food Festival and Leopold Square, while the article highlights how one regular, Stefano, has returned to singing after moving to England and stepping away from music.

In short

  • Sheffield’s Under the Wire is celebrating its first year.
