Full account
Thomas Markle Sr, the estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex, has been arrested in Florida in connection with an investigation into alleged possession of child sexual abuse material. Reports say federal agents took the 82-year-old into custody at Maravida Senior Living, a care home in Lakeland. The specific federal charges have not been publicly detailed in the accounts provided, and the allegations have not been established in court.
The investigation follows reports that material was found among belongings at Markle’s former home in Cebu, in the Philippines. His son, Thomas Markle Jr, has said he discovered a large quantity while clearing the property and reported it to authorities. Some outlets say he also contacted the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Philippine police are investigating; reports differ on whether formal charges there are imminent.
A separate cache was reportedly found in a storage unit near Markle’s former home in Rosarito, Mexico. The Daily Mail says its reporter alerted US authorities after accessing the unit, while other reports attribute the discovery to the paper without describing the circumstances in the same detail. Accounts say Mexican police later searched the unit. The material and its contents remain allegations in the reports.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, said she was deeply distressed and that her thoughts were with children who may have been harmed. She referred to allegations raised in a 2018 letter to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection, saying she had been assured they were being investigated. Markle has denied possessing the material, describing the claims as lies. His daughter Samantha has also rejected the allegations and accused his son of making them for personal reasons. The reports describe a developing investigation; no outcome is reported.
Where outlets differ
From the full account, which is AI-written from the sources:
The Daily Mail gives the most detail about the Florida arrest and says the FBI took Markle from the care home in the morning; The New York Post cites sources and references footage, while Fox News Digital confirms the arrest through a law-enforcement source but relies on other outlets for details.
The accounts vary over the Philippines timeline and the scale and description of the alleged material. Some say Markle Jr reported the finds in July; others do not give a date. Several quote his estimate of hundreds or thousands of images, which has not been independently established in these reports.
The Daily Mail says its reporter accessed the Mexico storage unit and alerted the FBI. The Post repeats that account and describes alleged items in the unit; the other reports provide less detail about how the material was found.
Coverage differs in emphasis: Fox News Digital gives substantial space to Meghan’s statement and the 2019 police confirmation about the 2018 letter; the Post reports foreground the family dispute and the denials by Samantha Markle and her partner. Page Six also discusses possible penalties, while noting that the specific federal charges were not known.

Explained simply
Thomas Markle is an American former television lighting director and the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. He and Meghan have been estranged for several years, and he has lived in different countries, including Mexico and the Philippines.
The FBI is the United States’ federal law enforcement agency. In cases involving suspected child sexual abuse material, authorities may investigate across borders and work with police in other countries. The allegations described are serious, but suspicion or an investigation does not establish guilt; any criminal case would need to be decided through legal proceedings.
