Melania Trump brokers ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to allow elderly to evacuate city of Oleshky on ‘brink of disaster’

Daily Mail ·

Melania Trump has brokered a local ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to allow civilians in Oleshky to evacuate safely. The pause in fighting is expected to begin on 29 October, as the city’s mainly elderly residents face an urgent need for medical care and basic supplies.

Oleshky has been under Russian control since February 2022, and residents have reportedly endured months of scarce food and medical supplies, with no electricity, heating or running water. Evacuees will be offered transport to a destination of their choice, in Russia or Ukraine, while an American media organisation is expected to document the process; the ceasefire uses channels previously involved in reuniting Ukrainian children with their families.

In short

  • A local ceasefire is planned for Oleshky from 29 October.
  • Residents will be able to evacuate to Russia or Ukraine.
  • The city’s elderly population faces shortages of essentials.
