Men under 30 led the shift toward the Democrats in the midterms
Democrats’ sweeping midterm victory, which gave them control of both chambers of Congress, was fuelled by voters across age and racial groups, including some who had supported Donald Trump in 2024. The sharpest movement towards the Democrats came from voters under 30, particularly young men, suggesting that opposition to Trump and dissatisfaction with the country’s direction helped shape the result.
Preliminary figures put Democratic support among under-30s at 70%, against 28% for Republicans, a 30-point swing compared with two years earlier; the shift among young men approached 40 points. Around six in 10 young voters said opposing Trump was a reason for their House vote, while 79% of young Hispanic voters backed Democrats, including many who had supported Trump in 2024. Young white voters also swung strongly towards Democrats, while Black voters remained overwhelmingly Democratic at 92%.
In short
- Voters under 30 swung 30 points towards Democrats.
- The shift among young men approached 40 points.
- Young Hispanic voters gave Democrats 79% of their votes.
