Midterm elections ‘doubled’ Ukraine’s chances of getting US military aid, official says
Ukrainian official David Arakhamia said the US midterm election results had at least doubled Ukraine’s chances of receiving more financial and military support from Washington. Democrats’ victory gave them control of both houses of Congress, which Arakhamia said made Kyiv more optimistic about future cooperation, with any increase in aid most likely to come in the first quarter of next year.
Ukraine still faces a difficult winter as Russian attacks target essential services, and Arakhamia said upcoming talks in Abu Dhabi would focus on getting Russia to de-escalate. His assessment follows a period of strained US-Ukraine relations, including a 99% drop in US aid after President Donald Trump declined to allocate new defence packages, delays to air-defence deliveries and other decisions that Kyiv said were not explained to it.
In short
- Arakhamia says the midterms doubled Ukraine’s chances of more US aid.
- Any increase is most likely in the first quarter of next year.
- Kyiv faces a difficult winter amid continued Russian attacks on infrastructure.
