A bluefin tuna leapt from the sea in front of surfers during a lesson at Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, last Tuesday. Video captured the fish pursuing and catching a mackerel in what was described as a feeding frenzy, making for a striking encounter close to shore.

The footage was filmed by Jacob Waller, a 23-year-old manager at Newquay Activity Centre, who said the clip was real and that tuna visit local waters from mid-summer to late autumn. Bluefin tuna have become more commonly seen around Britain after recovering from depleted numbers in the 1990s, following international conservation measures; sightings have been particularly noticeable off Cornwall.
