Morning coffee could interfere with popular weight-loss pill, doctors warn
Doctors are warning patients taking oral GLP-1 weight-loss medications, such as Wegovy tablets, that morning coffee or tea can interfere with how the drug works. This matters because oral GLP-1 pills are increasingly popular alternatives to injectable weight-loss treatments, and getting the dosing routine wrong could reduce their effectiveness for the many people now relying on them.
According to FDA prescribing information, Wegovy tablets must be taken on an empty stomach with no more than four ounces of water, and no other liquids, including coffee or tea. Patients are advised to wait at least 30 minutes afterwards before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medications, as Wegovy is the first FDA-approved oral drug for chronic weight management.
- Coffee or tea taken with Wegovy pills may reduce their effectiveness.
- FDA advises taking the tablet with only up to 4oz of water.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or other medication.
