MTG’s Most Popular Commander Has Been Officially Dethroned by a Final Fantasy Card

Polygon · 3 hours ago

Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed from Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy crossover has become EDHREC’s most popular Commander, overtaking The Ur-Dragon on 11 August. The change matters because it ends The Ur-Dragon’s roughly year-long lead and shows the enduring appeal of a crossover card that has retained players’ interest well beyond its initial release.

EDHREC recorded 49,813 Y’shtola decks after 425 days of availability, helped by her inclusion in a widely available preconstructed deck priced around its $69.99 recommended retail price; individual copies cost roughly $1–$4. Her broad Esper-colour abilities provide card draw, damage and life gain while supporting many deck styles, unlike more specialised tribal Commanders such as The Ur-Dragon and Edgar Markov; the other three leading Commanders cost more than $20 each.

  • Y’shtola is now EDHREC’s most popular Commander.
  • Availability and low price helped drive adoption.
  • Flexible abilities support many different deck strategies.
