Scientists now say the Nepal–Tibet floods were probably caused by a major rockfall and glacier collapse, rather than an earthquake or a glacial-lake outburst flood. The distinction matters because it highlights a broader danger from warming mountain environments, where thawing permafrost and melting glaciers may make large collapses and sudden floods more frequent.

The collapse on Langtang–Lirung is thought to have sent ice, rock and sediment down the valley, temporarily damming the Lhende Khola River before the water broke through. Hundreds have reportedly died and more than 1,500 people remain missing; researchers estimate that around 15 million people globally live in areas at risk of glacial flooding, particularly in High Mountain Asia, with risks also identified in North America, the Alps and the Andes.

Glaciers are large, slow-moving masses of ice found in high mountain regions. As temperatures rise, ice can melt and unstable rock or frozen ground around glaciers can weaken, increasing the chance of landslides and sudden floods.

The case for caution is that individual mountain disasters have complex local causes, and the reported Nepal event was apparently not a conventional glacial-lake outburst flood. A thoughtful sceptic would argue that global risk maps and population estimates should guide preparedness but not be presented as predictions of imminent catastrophe, since hazard varies greatly by valley, infrastructure and local geology. They may favour targeted, evidence-led adaptation that distinguishes well-established risks from uncertain projections, while avoiding alarm that could misdirect limited resources.
