Netflix India is expanding comedy into a permanent programming pillar rather than a series of one-off bets, according to Monika Shergill, the streamer's VP of content. She told Variety that comedy's subjective nature means the platform must serve varied tastes through a mix of formats, voices and sensibilities, arguing that culturally specific Indian humour can travel internationally without being diluted, as shown by Vir Das's International Emmy-winning special "Landing".

The expanded slate spans film, scripted series, stand-up and unscripted formats, opening with "Dhamaal 4" and family comedy "Chumbak" from the makers of "Khichdi" and "Sarabhai vs Sarabhai". Other titles include Zakir Khan's "Papa Yaar", the fifth season of "The Great Indian Kapil Show", Bhuvan Bam's "Dhindora" Season 2, a new special from newcomer Sumukhi Suresh, and further episodes of Samay Raina's "India's Got Latent". Shergill said Netflix looks for a distinctive point of view and strong idea over follower counts when signing comics, and rejected the idea that audiences are fragmenting, describing them instead as diversifying their tastes across shows ranging from dark comedy to workplace and crime-caper formats.
