Netflix Taps ‘Friday Night Lights’ Director Peter Berg for NFL Gameday Openers, the First Narrated by Kyle Chandler

Variety · 2 hours ago

Netflix has enlisted director Peter Berg, best known for the film "Friday Night Lights", to create the opening sequences for all four of its NFL gameday livestreams this season. For the first instalment, debuting on 10 September, Berg brought in Kyle Chandler, who played Coach Taylor in the "Friday Night Lights" television series, to provide narration, lending the piece an unmistakable "Friday Night Lights" tone.

The two-minute opener, titled "For the Love of Football", airs ahead of Netflix's broadcast from Melbourne, Australia of the Los Angeles Rams against the San Francisco 49ers, and blends footage of youth football teams and their coaches with NFL game action, featuring Chandler's voiceover urging players to compete with "clear eyes, full hearts". Berg will also direct openers for three further Netflix NFL gamedays: Green Bay Packers vs Rams on Thanksgiving Eve, a Christmas Day double-header featuring the Packers, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos, and a Week 18 fixture on 9 January 2027. Berg already has ties to Netflix through "The Mosquito Bowl", a war-era sports drama he wrote, directed and produced, due in cinemas on 30 October ahead of its Netflix release on 25 November.
