New Bradford railway station will ‘transform travel across the north’

The Guardian ·

A new station at Bradford Interchange is planned as part of Northern Powerhouse Rail, enabling through trains between Leeds and Manchester. The government says more frequent, faster services could improve travel across the north and support homes, jobs and regeneration in Bradford.

The station is expected to be built by the mid-2030s and is intended to provide a “turn-up-and-go” service, with trains frequent enough that passengers need not check timetables. Bradford council estimates the station and proposed Leeds tram could bring more than £1bn in economic benefits. Northern Powerhouse Rail has a funding cap of £45bn and will begin with improvements to existing lines around Yorkshire.

Bradford sits on a railway route between Leeds and Manchester, but its current station layout does not allow trains to travel directly through the city between those places. Northern Powerhouse Rail is a proposed programme to improve rail links across northern England, beginning with upgrades to existing lines in Yorkshire.

The planned station at Bradford Interchange is intended to let trains run through the city, with more frequent services and shorter journeys. The government says better connections could help people reach work and other towns, while supporting housing and regeneration; Bradford council has also estimated potential economic benefits from the station and a proposed Leeds tram.
