New Celtic signings unlikely before LASK tie but O’Neill happy for Hatate to stay

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill says new signings are unlikely to arrive before the club's Champions League play-off first leg against LASK on Wednesday, following a busy summer that has already brought in Camilo Duran, Kasper Hogh, Mika Baur and Haissem Hassan. He also indicated he would be happy for midfielder Reo Hatate to remain at the club despite transfer interest, provided the Japan international is willing to fight for his place. This matters because Celtic head into a crucial European tie short of options in midfield after selling Arne Engels to West Ham.

With Engels gone and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suspended, O'Neill said the club are still seeking a replacement and suggested recent arrival Baur, who made his debut as a substitute in Sunday's 4-0 win over Dundee United, could start against the Austrians. Hatate, 28, has yet to feature this season and last started in April, but O'Neill said he wants the trophy-laden midfielder to rediscover the form that once made him one of the best players in Scotland, adding that any transfer enquiries remain "nothing definitive".

  • No new Celtic signings expected before Wednesday's LASK play-off tie
  • Baur tipped to start after Engels' sale and Oxlade-Chamberlain's suspension
  • O'Neill happy for out-of-favour Hatate to stay and fight for his place
