A new Far Cry title is reportedly in development at Ubisoft, according to insider Tom Henderson, while a separate extraction shooter spin-off from the series has been cancelled. The new game, codenamed Kodiak, is an open-world FPS said to emphasise player interactions and player-driven stories, though it remains several years from release. This matters because fans have waited nearly five years since the last mainline entry, the longest gap in the franchise's history, and the report offers the first concrete word on where the series is heading next.

The cancelled spin-off, codenamed Maverick, reportedly spent years in troubled development before being scrapped, with the new Kodiak project said to be built on its foundations. Far Cry 6, released in 2021, received a lukewarm critical reception (a Metacritic score of 73) and a notably poorer audience score of 5.5, which may partly explain why Ubisoft is said to be taking a more considered, "ambitious" approach this time rather than rushing a sequel.
