New-look Villa turn to Scandinavia as they rebuild squad

BBC Sport ·

Aston Villa have signed four Scandinavian players this summer as part of a wider squad overhaul following a disappointing ninth-place finish in the Women's Super League last season. The arrivals – three Norwegians and one Dane – form part of eight senior signings and mark a notable shift for a club that previously had no Scandinavian players, as manager Natalie Arroyo looks to replace departures such as Kirsty Hanson and Ebony Salmon and push Villa back towards the top half of the table.

The new signings are Norway internationals Mathilde Harviken, Kamilla Melgard and Justine Kielland, along with Denmark striker Amalie Vangsgaard, who joins alongside Harviken from Juventus. Villa now have the fourth-largest Scandinavian contingent in the WSL, behind Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool, out of 42 such players across 14 clubs. Kielland and Harviken said pre-existing friendships and shared language have eased their transition, echoing similar recruitment strategies previously used by Manchester United, Spurs and Everton to strengthen their squads with Scandinavian talent.
