New Mexico court orders Meta to pay additional $567M in child safety case

TechCrunch · 3 weeks ago

A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta to pay a further $567 million over alleged harms to children caused by its social-media platforms, bringing the state’s total penalties against the company to $942 million. The ruling also requires platform changes for under-18s in New Mexico, making it a significant attempt to hold a major technology company accountable for alleged youth addiction, exploitation risks and mental-health harm.

The order follows a $375 million penalty imposed in March and describes Meta’s products as a public nuisance in the state. It would remove public Like counts for minors unless approved by a parent or guardian, stop notifications from 10pm to 7am, and limit minors’ use to 90 hours a month; Meta says it will appeal. The company faces other US cases, including a consolidated lawsuit involving 33 states.

  • New Mexico penalties against Meta now total $942 million.
  • Judge ordered restrictions on Meta platforms for under-18s.
  • Meta disputes the ruling and plans an appeal.
