New Yorkers could be in charge of White House, House and Senate in historic first after blue wave midterms
Democrats flipped control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections, putting New Yorkers Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer in line to lead the House and Senate. If they secure the required votes, they would join President Donald Trump, a Queens native, as New Yorkers simultaneously holding the presidency, House speakership and Senate majority leadership for the first time.
Schumer still needs to be elected majority leader by Democratic senators, and Jeffries must win a vote of the full House to become speaker. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said having leaders with ties to the city in Washington could be important and called for partnership across city, state and federal government. The prospect comes despite years of public clashes: Trump has traded insults with Jeffries and Schumer, who have both criticised him.
In short
- Democrats flipped both chambers in the midterms.
- Jeffries and Schumer could lead the House and Senate.
- Their New York ties have not prevented clashes with Trump.
