A newly engaged couple in Ohio were struck by an alleged drunk driver on 6 September, killing 23-year-old teacher Cameron Lyon and leaving his fiancée, Abrielle Kerns, 22, seriously injured. The suspect, Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, 33, has been confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security to be in the country illegally and to have previously been deported, prompting officials including DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to highlight the case in comments about immigration enforcement.

The crash occurred as the pair were driving home from a family reunion when Uribe-Gonzalez's vehicle veered off the highway, overcorrected and crossed into their lane. Lyon, who had recently started a teaching job and proposed to Kerns in July, died after being taken to hospital, while Kerns was treated in intensive care before moving to a rehabilitation facility. Uribe-Gonzalez has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and driving without a valid licence, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against him.
