NFL and TMRW Sports’ Set ‘Premier Flag’ League Launch for Summer 2027
The NFL and TMRW Sports have named their new professional flag football league Premier Flag, with its first season set for summer 2027. The launch will come before flag football features at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as the NFL aims to grow the sport both as a route into traditional American football and as a competition in its own right.
The inaugural season is planned for a purpose-built stadium, whose location has not been announced, and media rights are still being discussed. All 32 NFL team owners are investors, alongside institutional and celebrity backers; TMRW Sports says the league will feature top women and men and provide professional training and coaching. A Premier Flag Showcase is planned during Super Bowl LXI week.
In short
- Premier Flag will launch in summer 2027.
- Its first season will precede flag football’s Olympic debut in 2028.
- Stadium location and media rights remain undecided.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A professionally run league could give elite women and men better coaching, training and a durable platform to compete, while raising flag football’s profile ahead of its Olympic debut. NFL investment and promotion may attract audiences and resources that help the sport grow both as a distinct competition and as an entry point to wider participation.
The case against
A league built with all NFL team owners as investors may steer the sport towards the NFL’s commercial and talent-development priorities, potentially narrowing space for independent organisations or other approaches to the game. With the venue and media arrangements still unsettled, it is also reasonable to question whether the promised opportunities and broad reach will materialise, and whether attention and investment will be shared fairly between women’s and men’s competitions.
Explained simply
Flag football is a non-contact version of American football: instead of tackling a player, defenders stop the play by pulling a flag from their belt. It uses familiar features such as passing, routes and scoring, but its smaller teams and reduced contact make it a distinct format.
The NFL is the main professional American football league in the United States, while TMRW Sports develops sports competitions and events. The NFL’s 32 team owners are backing the new league as investors, and it is intended to feature both women and men.
Flag football is due to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. A professional league could give leading players a regular competition and wider visibility, while helping the NFL develop interest in flag football beyond its traditional game.
