Sadiki’s stoppage-time strike completes Sunderland’s comeback against Torreense

The Guardian ·

Sunderland came from behind to beat Portuguese side Torreense 2-1, with Noah Sadiki scoring a dramatic winner in stoppage time for the club’s second consecutive Europa League victory. The result mattered after a sluggish first half from a heavily rotated Sunderland side had left their first competitive trip to mainland Europe in 53 years in danger of ending in defeat.

Torreense, a second-tier team who had beaten Sporting to win the Portuguese Cup the previous spring, took the lead just before half-time through Volnei Feltes, who curled in from around 20 yards. Sunderland’s changes brought on Enzo Le Fée, Granit Xhaka and Nordi Mukiele; Jules Ahoka equalised with a header before Sadiki finished a move involving Le Fée and Xhaka three minutes into stoppage time. Sunderland had won their opening Europa League match at Lillestrøm.

  • Sadiki scored Sunderland’s winner three minutes into stoppage time.

Sunderland are an English football club competing in the Europa League, a tournament for clubs from across Europe. Torreense are from Portugal’s second tier; they had made an impact by beating top-flight Sporting to win the Portuguese Cup the previous spring.

The match was Sunderland’s first competitive trip to mainland Europe in 53 years, and followed a win in their opening Europa League game against Norwegian side Lillestrøm. Sunderland had rotated much of their team, while the changes later brought on experienced players including Granit Xhaka and Enzo Le Fée.

The result gave Sunderland a second consecutive win in the competition and showed how a match can change as substitutes influence the play. Noah Sadiki and Jules Ahoka scored for Sunderland, while Volnei Feltes had put Torreense ahead.
