Cameron Norrie ended a six-match losing streak by beating American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4 6-1 in the first round of the Mifel Open in Mexico, his first win since the Madrid Open in April. The British number two, now ranked 39th and outside the top 30 for the first time this year, had endured a difficult run that included a first-round exit at Wimbledon to qualifier Michael Zheng.

Playing at the venue in Los Cabos where he claimed his first ATP title in 2021, the fifth seed recovered from two early service breaks to take the first set, then dropped only five points on serve in the second while breaking Kovacevic twice. He will face either Australian James Duckworth or American Aidan Mayo in the last 16. Separately, British number two Katie Boulter was knocked out of the Citi Open in Washington DC, losing 3-6 6-2 6-2 to American Ashlyn Krueger to extend her own losing run to four matches.
