AI infrastructure provider Nscale secures bulk of UK datacenter investment

The Register · 2 hours ago

Nscale, a "rent-a-GPU" AI infrastructure provider, has raised $3.7 billion, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the $5.7 billion in equity funding raised across the entire UK datacenter infrastructure sector, according to market research firm Tracxn. Nscale is identified as the only unicorn in this segment of Britain's tech industry, underscoring how heavily AI-driven demand is concentrating investment in a single company rather than spreading it across the wider market.

Other notable fundraisers include GreenScale ($1.3 billion), Kao Data ($177 million), Verne ($125 million), Iceotope ($107 million) and Six Degrees Group ($106 million). Tracxn tracked 154 companies in the sector, of which only 24 have raised equity funding, with London-based firms capturing 93 percent of the total. The sector has also seen 36 acquisitions but just two IPOs, the largest deal being Equinix's $3.8 billion purchase of TelecityGroup. Separately, infrastructure specialist Onnec cites Barbour ABI data showing nearly 100 UK datacenter projects worth over £36 billion in the pipeline, a figure that includes overseas operators excluded from Tracxn's analysis, while also warning that 43 percent of operators across the UK, Ireland and the Nordics needed remedial upgrades after facilities went live.
