Nvidia has introduced the OpenShell Reference Architecture, a blueprint for running and governing corporate AI agents on its hardware. It aims to let agents perform useful tasks while limiting their access and monitoring their behaviour, responding to concerns that agents can exceed their instructions and affect third parties.
The system builds on Nvidia’s OpenShell runtime, which adds controls for credentials, identity and policy to existing agent sandboxes. The proposed setup uses Vera Rubin infrastructure, Vera CPUs and BlueField-4 data processing units; Nvidia says partners including Canonical, SUSE, Red Hat and major cloud providers can support it. BBVA and Santander are reviewing the specification, while SAP is integrating it with Joule Studio. OpenShell collects telemetry by default, though users can opt out.
