Open-weight AI companies are the Valley’s hottest acquisition targets

TechCrunch · 1 hour ago

Open-weight AI companies are becoming sought-after acquisition targets, with Nvidia reportedly pursuing Hugging Face for $13 billion after other large deals involving Poolside and OpenRouter. The interest reflects a strategic push by major technology firms to secure influence over the tools, developers and standards behind models that organisations can adapt and run themselves, rather than relying solely on proprietary frontier AI providers.

Nvidia reportedly agreed a $6 billion deal with Poolside that would bring most of its staff to the chipmaker, while Stripe bought OpenRouter for more than $7 billion. Open-weight models remain relatively lightly used—6% of companies in Ramp’s spending-data survey and 2% of engineers surveyed by Jellyfish—but can be cheaper for repeated, high-volume workloads such as customer-service chats. Companies currently value them mainly for control and customisation, though rising proprietary-model prices could increase adoption as AI workflows mature.
