OpenAI is reportedly developing a premium, battery-powered smart speaker with moving components and lights intended to make it feel more responsive and lifelike. Bloomberg says the device could cost more than $300, positioning it as a potential smartphone alternative built around more advanced, conversational ChatGPT capabilities; its success would test whether users will pay for dedicated AI hardware.

The speaker is said to be doughnut-shaped, roughly hockey-puck sized, and designed with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom studio using high-quality metal and other premium materials. Bloomberg reports OpenAI has considered a $400 price, may unveil it this year and release it in 2027, although Apple’s trade-secrets lawsuit could affect plans; OpenAI’s internal review reportedly found no Apple intellectual property in the product.
