‘Our roots are Man Utd’ – but FC United ethos ‘more important than ever’
FC United of Manchester, formed by supporters unhappy with the Glazer family’s takeover of Manchester United, says its community-focused ethos matters more than ever as fans face rising barriers to attending top-level football. The supporter-owned club has developed its own identity in North Manchester while retaining traditions rooted in Manchester United.
The club works with Manchester College to help academy players pursue education and a route into senior football, and makes regular updates to its 1,528 adult members. It is increasing solar power at its 4,900-capacity Broadhurst Park, aiming to save up to £4,000, and has received a £5,000 donation. The club has also faced significant debt after overextending to build its ground; it is discussing stadium naming rights as the venue shows wear and tear.
