Palestinian Minister of Health warns of outbreak of disease in storm-battered Gaza
Palestinian Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan has warned that flooding, cold and worsening sanitation in Gaza are increasing the risk of disease among displaced people. He said the conditions pose an escalating public health threat requiring immediate international action.
Tens of thousands are sheltering in makeshift or damaged tents, while restrictions have limited the entry of aid, including shelter materials. Overcrowding and damp conditions may increase respiratory infections, particularly among children, infants and older people; unsafe water, sewage failures and waste raise risks of contamination and pests. Malnutrition, especially among children and pregnant women, may also make infections harder to fight.
In short
- Gaza’s flooding and poor sanitation raise disease risks.
- Displaced people lack adequate shelter and clean water.
- Malnutrition may increase vulnerability to infection.
