Panic, the creator of the Playdate handheld console, is refunding US customers who paid a tariff surcharge on their purchases. The move follows a February 2026 Supreme Court decision finding the Trump administration’s original tariff regime illegal, and stands out because most affected electronics companies have not announced similar customer refunds.

Panic had passed on a 19 per cent tariff charge as a separate checkout item, treating it as a tax it had paid to the US government. It stopped applying that fee to new orders after 21 April, but refunds took until August while the company sought its own government reimbursement and built a payment process; Amazon, Sony and Nintendo now face class-action cases over alleged obligations to refund tariff charges.
