A councillor in Llanfaelog, a village near Rhosneigr on Anglesey, has claimed the area has been "taken over by outsiders" and that Welsh is no longer heard in local shops and cafes, amid a contentious planning row over a holiday let. Robert Llewelyn-Jones raised the concerns during a council meeting considering a retrospective application to retain use of a property as a holiday let, arguing that approval would further harm the Welsh language locally. His comments were disputed by a fellow councillor, who said the remarks were unfair and pointed out that many local tradespeople are Welsh speakers.

Planning officials had recommended refusing the retrospective application, but councillors voted in favour, meaning the decision must now be reconsidered. Rhys Lloyd-Jones, head of development and planning, said 37.49% of properties in the Llanfaelog Community Council area are holiday lets, more than double recommended guidelines, warning that high concentrations drive up house prices, alter local culture and strain infrastructure and community services. He argued that planning policy must be applied consistently and strictly in areas with such high proportions of second homes and holiday accommodation.
