Police responded to reports of a serious assault at 10.51pm on 30 August, and Jewitt died in hospital three days later after suffering critical head injuries. Jeremiah Maximo, 38, has been charged with grievous bodily harm; following Jewitt’s death, prosecutors are expected to consider amending the charge, potentially to murder or manslaughter. The carnival attracted up to two million visitors and saw 636 arrests, including arrests linked to weapons, assaults and breaches of sex-offender conditions.
