Playdate Season 3 kicks off on October 8

Engadget · 1 hour ago

Playdate maker Panic has announced that Season 3 of its curated game bundle for the handheld console will launch on 8 October, priced at $39, with pre-orders now open. The season will roll out over four weeks, releasing two new titles each week in a "blind-box" style reveal, bringing the total to eight games for the price. This follows Season 1, built into every device with 24 games, and Season 2, which cost the same $39 but included 12 games plus a bonus app.

Panic revealed all eight Season 3 titles during a showcase, including Soggy Froggy, a crank-based temperature game; Gloom Gate, a soulslike dungeon crawler; Houm, an unsettling point-and-click mansion adventure; plus Sound Mind, HELLEVATOR, Bonkhope, Chance's Lucky Escape 2 and Cross Words. Although Season 3 offers fewer games than Season 2 for the same price, individual Playdate titles are typically inexpensive (around $10 at most), making it roughly $5 per game. Separately, Panic confirmed a Playdate Catalog Fall Sale running from 5–19 November, discounting more than 200 games.

Playdate is a small, brightly coloured handheld games console made by a company called Panic, notable for having a hand-crank on the side that some games use for controls. Rather than selling games individually as most consoles do, Panic bundles new titles together into "seasons" – a set number of games unlocked gradually over several weeks, sold as one package.

The first season came free with every console, and Season 2 followed as a paid add-on. Each season has introduced a mix of games from independent developers, often released as surprises rather than announced in advance, which has become part of the appeal for Playdate owners. The price and format of each new season are closely watched by the console's fairly niche but dedicated fanbase, since they shape how much new content owners get and what it costs.
