The incident intensified concern among players about Sony’s proposed move away from physical games, because some users temporarily could not access content they had bought digitally.

Reports of problems surged from about 6:47 a.m. EDT, with Sony saying all PSN services were affected across consoles and the web; AWS connectivity issues were cited and later said to be resolved. The disruption also affected the opening of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls’ beta, while critics pointed to the broader risk that digital purchases are licences which may be withdrawn, as seen when Sony previously removed purchased films after a licensing agreement ended.
