PlayStation says it’s not backing down on ending physical disc

Polygon · 2 hours ago

Sony Interactive Entertainment has said it will not reverse its decision to stop producing physical PlayStation game discs, despite vocal criticism from some players. Chief financial officer Lin Tao said the move reflects the broader shift towards digital content and that Sony is considering how to maintain its relationship with fans who value physical media.

Physical discs accounted for only 3% of PlayStation sales in 2024, according to a previous Sony corporate report, suggesting the commercial impact may be limited. Digital games offer convenience such as preloading and immediate access, but remove the ability to resell games; opponents argue this weakens consumer ownership, and a seven-day player boycott is planned for late August.
