Poland detains 6 suspects working for Russian intelligence, Polish official says
Poland’s Internal Security Agency has detained six people suspected of working for Russian special services and supplying Russia with military-grade materials used to make ammunition and weapons systems. The arrests form part of a wider investigation into suspected espionage and sabotage, as European governments prepare for possible Russian hybrid attacks.
The group comprises five Polish nationals aged 25 to 52 and a 37-year-old Russian woman, according to special services coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak. Four are in pre-trial detention on espionage charges, while two face non-custodial preventive measures. Investigators searched 21 sites in three provinces between 21 October and 2 November; Siemoniak said nearly 100 people had been named as suspects in espionage and sabotage cases since 1 January 2024.
In short
- Poland detained six people suspected of working for Russian intelligence.
- The group allegedly supplied military-grade materials to Russia.
- Nearly 100 suspects have been identified in related cases since 2024.
Explained simply
Poland’s Internal Security Agency investigates threats to the country, including suspected spying. Polish authorities say Russian intelligence services have sought to gather information and materials through people in Poland.
Military-grade materials can be used in ammunition and weapons systems, so their supply is closely controlled. Suspected espionage and sabotage are part of wider concerns in Europe about covert activity linked to Russia, which can target security without taking the form of open military conflict.
