Gunfire erupted during a high school football game in Bakersfield, California on Friday night, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old attendee. The violence occurred around 8 p.m. as Independence High School hosted its season-opening matchup against Centennial High School.

Law enforcement arrested a 15-year-old youth in connection with the shooting, which authorities have characterised as gang-related. The Bakersfield Police Department noted that neither the suspect nor the victim were enrolled at Independence High School.
