A female police constable has been killed in a serious crash involving a marked patrol car that struck a tree in Sydney's inner west. The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:30am on Friday in Redfern, has prompted police to declare a critical incident. This tragedy underscores the dangers officers face whilst carrying out their duties to protect the public.

The fully marked police vehicle was travelling under lights and sirens along Gibbons Street when it collided with the tree and was torn in half. The female constable, who was a passenger, died at the scene and remains formally unidentified. The male driver sustained injuries but was treated by paramedics and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition. A large section of Gibbons Street remains closed, along with Regent Street and Wyndham Street, with several bus routes diverted as investigators examine the circumstances.
