Political heiress dies in ‘incredibly painful’ circumstances aged just 55 after failed election bid and ugly squabble over family fortune

Renata Ford, the widow of the controversial former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, has died at the age of 55. Her death was announced by her brother-in-law, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who described the loss as "incredibly painful" for her two children, Stephanie and Dougie. The cause of death has not been made clear. The passing of a member of one of Canada's most prominent political families has drawn condolences across the political spectrum.

Renata leaves behind a public history marked by both a political bid and a family dispute. In 2019 she stood for the People's Party of Canada in Etobicoke, finishing fourth. That campaign followed a $15 million CAD (roughly $10 million USD) lawsuit she brought against her late husband's brothers, including Premier Doug Ford, alleging they had mismanaged family assets and her husband's estate — claims the premier denied. Rob Ford, who served as Toronto mayor from 2010 to 2014, became mired in scandal after a video appeared to show him smoking crack cocaine. The Ontario Liberal Party was among those offering condolences to the family.
