Doctors have confirmed that Pope Leo XIV’s lung cancer was localised, and he needs no further treatment after the tumour was removed. The results offer a reassuring update on his health following surgery earlier this month.

The tumour was identified as lung adenocarcinoma in tests on tissue removed from his right lung. Surgeons operated at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on 13 October; the procedure lasted about 90 minutes and had no complications. Leo was discharged on Saturday after blood tests and a chest X-ray, and visited the hospital’s children’s oncology ward before returning to the Vatican.
