Chicago hospital kitchen shut after inspectors find over 200 live cockroaches
Chicago health inspectors found more than 200 live cockroaches and black slime dripping onto ice at the Rendezvous Café and patient kitchen at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The city suspended the food service licence after the Friday inspection, raising concerns about food safety and why pest problems recorded in April had not been resolved.
Inspectors also reported grease build-up, leaking sinks and pipes, damaged flooring, improperly stored utensils, milk crates used as shelving and a torn cooler door gasket. The hospital said it would clean and sanitise affected areas and hire pest control, while arranging alternative meal preparation so patients’ meals continue. The kitchen can request another inspection once the violations are corrected, but no reopening date has been announced.
