PostgreSQL 19 delayed as AI reviews uncover defects and design flaws

The Register ·

The PostgreSQL Global Development Group has delayed PostgreSQL 19 until around 19 November and postponed eight to 10 significant features. Developers say improved AI-assisted code reviews surfaced architectural problems and many smaller defects, raising the quality bar and leaving too little time to address them before release.

One postponed feature is support for SQL Property Graph Queries, a standardised way to explore relationships between connected data. The delayed features are expected to move to PostgreSQL 20; PostgreSQL 19 will still include REPACK CONCURRENTLY, which can reclaim disk space without the table lock used by VACUUM FULL. Developers say the extra scrutiny should make the release more robust, and stressed that the changes were not caused by “vibe coding”.

  • PostgreSQL 19 is now expected around 19 November.
  • AI-assisted reviews uncovered defects that developers could not fix in time.
  • Eight to 10 features are expected to move to PostgreSQL 20.
