Pressley signs new Dundee deal but warns of pain ahead

BBC Sport ·

Dundee head coach Steven Pressley has signed a new contract, saying it was the right decision personally and professionally despite warning that the club face a difficult period after losing several important players. His extension offers continuity after he led Dundee to eighth place in the Scottish Premiership last season, but he has urged supporters to be patient while a rebuilt squad settles.

Pressley, 52, replaced Tony Docherty in June 2025 and is believed to remain on a one-year rolling contract; his wife will now move back to Scotland after he spent almost a year living apart from his family. Dundee have lost Luke Graham, Billy Koumetio and Jon McCracken, while loanees Yan Dhanda, Cameron Congreve and Tony Yogane have returned to their parent clubs. Dundee begin the new league campaign away to champions Celtic on Monday, with Celtic unbeaten in home opening-day fixtures for nearly 76 years.

New here? Start with this

Steven Pressley is the head coach of Dundee, a Scottish football club in the top tier of Scottish football. He took the position in June 2025, replacing Tony Docherty, and has just signed a new contract with the club. He is 52 years old and has decided to recommit to the role despite the challenges ahead.

Last season, Dundee finished eighth in the Scottish Premiership under Pressley's management. However, the club has recently lost several important players: Luke Graham, Billy Koumetio and Jon McCracken have departed, whilst loan signings Yan Dhanda, Cameron Congreve and Tony Yogane have returned to their parent clubs. This significant turnover means the team will face a rebuilding task as the new season gets under way.

The campaign begins this week with Dundee travelling to face Celtic, the Scottish champions, in what is traditionally a demanding opening fixture. This meeting with the defending league winners provides an early test for Pressley's squad.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Keeping Pressley offers Dundee continuity after an eighth-place finish and gives him time to rebuild the squad through a difficult transition. His commitment also has a personal dimension, with his family moving back to Scotland, and patience from supporters could help a new group settle.

The case against

A new deal may be premature when key players have departed and the squad still needs rebuilding, leaving uncertainty over whether Dundee can maintain last season’s progress. Supporters could reasonably expect clearer evidence of a stronger squad and results before committing to continuity, particularly with the season opening away to champions Celtic.
