PS5’s Fastest Growing Open World Adds Beach Volleyball, Jet Skis, and Construction Work

Push Square · 3 hours ago

Chinese developer Hotta Studio is rolling out another substantial content update to its open-world PS5 title NTE on 19th August, adding activities including beach volleyball, jet ski races, and construction-based minigames. The update continues the game's unusually rapid pace of expansion, following a previous update that introduced an entire fantasy RPG mode, and reflects the aggressive content pipelines typical of gacha-style live-service games.

The new update adds two playable gacha characters, Zankou and Linko, each with unique combat abilities and social interactions, alongside new outfits for them and existing characters obtainable through gameplay, in-game credit, or a new blind box gacha. A new car-focused island offers Initial D-style drift racing and street events, while the beach volleyball minigame involves selecting and levelling up partners, with weekly tournaments rewarding in-game currency. Construction work introduces new ways to use City Stamina, the fantasy RPG mode gains a combat ladder, and other additions include a purchasable garden property, a new bicycle vehicle, and continued main story content. A further update adding a teased theme park area is planned for later in the year.

NTE is a big-budget open-world game for PlayStation 5, developed by the Chinese studio Hotta Studio. It launched as a live-service title, meaning it is regularly updated with new content, characters and activities rather than being a finished product released once and left alone. It has been notable for how quickly it has grown since launch, adding large amounts of new content in a short space of time compared with typical games of its kind.

The game uses a "gacha" system, a model borrowed from mobile games in which players can obtain characters, outfits or items through randomised in-game purchases or rewards, alongside content earned through normal play. This business model is common in Chinese-developed live-service games and shapes how new characters and cosmetics are typically introduced with each update.

Recent updates have expanded NTE well beyond its original scope, including adding an entirely separate fantasy role-playing mode. This pattern of frequent, large content drops is part of why the game has drawn attention, as it reflects a broader trend among some Chinese studios of releasing live-service games at a much faster pace than many Western or Japanese equivalents.
