Putin Orders Private Data Centers to Set Aside 10% of Capacity to Support IT Infrastructure
President Vladimir Putin has ordered privately owned Russian data centres to reserve 10% of their capacity for use in supporting the country’s IT infrastructure. The measure gives authorities a way to access spare computing resources quickly when required, amid recent Ukrainian drone attacks on data centres.
The decree directs the Digital Development Ministry to inventory capacity and floor space at private facilities. A government commission will be able to order the reserved capacity released, and operators must provide access within 24 hours. The decree also permits temporary use of data centres abroad, subject to approval by the FSB security service.
In short
- Private data centres must reserve 10% of capacity.
- Operators have 24 hours to provide access when ordered.
- The decree allows temporary use of foreign data centres with FSB approval.
