Adam Ramsay-Peaty suffered his first-ever defeat at a European Aquatics Championships, finishing fifth in the men's 100m breaststroke final in Paris. The 31-year-old, who had won 16 European titles and never previously lost a heat, semi-final or final at the event, was beaten as Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi took gold. It marks a further setback for the three-time Olympic champion following a disappointing Commonwealth Games last month, where he managed only two bronze medals.

Martinenghi won in 58.58 seconds, with Ivan Kozhakin second and Simone Cerasuolo third, while Ramsay-Peaty clocked 59.10, edging Great Britain team-mate Filip Nowacki into sixth by just 0.01 seconds. Elsewhere for Britain, Katie Shanahan won the women's 200m backstroke by 1.49 seconds in 2:06.13, having taken silver in the same event in Rome in 2022, and Angharad Evans set a new championship record of 1:04.97 in the 100m breaststroke semi-final.
