Victorian red post box offered for £17,500 at Mayfair antiques fair
An 18-inch red-painted Victorian post box, dating from 1875, is among the rare items for sale at the LAPADA Berkeley Square Fair in Mayfair. Its unusual colour and survival in such condition make it a notable attraction for collectors, as miniature country-house boxes were usually left unpainted.
Dealer Mark Goodger is asking £17,500 for the box, which may have served a country house or hotel and is thought to be one of only a handful of red examples. The fair runs from Tuesday to Sunday and also features a £45,000 silver-mounted horn casket made for Queen Victoria but presented to Edward VII, alongside other antiques including an 18th-century tea caddy.
In short

Explained simply
Victorian post boxes were part of the postal system that carried letters across Britain, and smaller versions were made for use within large homes or hotels. Many miniature country-house boxes were left unpainted, so a red example is unusual.
The box is being offered by antiques dealer Mark Goodger at the LAPADA Berkeley Square Fair, where dealers display objects for sale to collectors and the public. Its age, condition and rarity help explain the asking price; the fair also includes other historic objects, among them a silver-mounted horn casket associated with Queen Victoria and Edward VII.
