Real to resume talks with Arsenal target Vinicius Jr

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Real Madrid are set to resume contract talks with Vinicius Jr this week, with Arsenal continuing to monitor the Brazilian forward as their priority left-wing target should his situation remain unresolved. The uncertainty stems from 18 months of stalled negotiations between Real Madrid and the player's representatives over a new deal, driven largely by disagreements over wages and Vinicius's status within the club. With his current contract running to 2027 but effectively entering its final year of value, Real risk losing him for free unless terms are agreed soon, giving the talks fresh urgency.

Vinicius returned to Real Madrid on Monday for pre-season training and a medical after Brazil's World Cup campaign, and is training under new manager Jose Mourinho for the first time this week. Mourinho is reportedly keen for the 26-year-old to commit his long-term future to the club, and Vinicius himself has called Real "the club of my dreams", saying he hopes to stay "for many years". Real, however, maintain a strict salary structure under president Florentino Perez, with Kylian Mbappe currently the club's top earner, complicating Vinicius's reported push for recognition as the team's leading financial asset. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is said to be keen on signing him to build on last season's Premier League title, but sources stress a move is far from certain and the decision rests largely with the player.
